A bouncer is keeping the connection to an IRC-server up, this way you can read the messages, when you get back.
Smuxi now additionally keeps the original time-stamp which a bouncer doesn't. Furthermore it is possible for Smuxi to remember the highlights you've already seen and just mark those tabs in the respective highlight color, which really contain new highlights. As well you can connect to the remote engine from every Smuxi frontend and it is using the preferences saved within the engine. This means you don't have to setup the settings several times but just one time.
